Communications – Professional Writing



This hybrid course of in-class lectures and on-line modules offers an alternative delivery of content to introduce the subject of professional report writing. In this course, students will develop the necessary communication skills that ensure professionalism in the field of disability.


The course covers the theory of professional and accurate report writing, reviewing such topics as: purpose and audience, centennial college professional writing, confidentiality and privacy, e-mails and letters, and record keeping and centennial college professional writing reports.


Students will be given the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to accurately fill out, and prepare various work-place reports. In addition, a variety of field related scenarios will be provided for assessment, and students will create the relevant documents.

Course Learning Outcomes The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to: Demonstrate an understanding of the various forms and documents required in a variety of situations relating to the support of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Establish report writing abilities that address various audiences for various purposes, centennial college professional writing. Review a variety of scenarios involving individuals with intellectual disabilities then create various reports.


Demonstrate the ability to accurately and efficiently fill out various documents. Identify elements and responsibilities essential to ensuring that the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities are upheld while creating various support documents. Complete a variety of report writing assignments, as well as two brief summaries of current policies and procedures regarding report writing and confidentiality within the work place.
